Grand Re-Enactment Weekend

This weekend will celebrate the early history of the area with a truly international re-enactment event! Don't miss out - Check the Whole Schedule.
The Brigade of the American Revolution (www.brigade.org ) has announced that the Shelburne celebration will be a key “national” event for the organization in 2008. With over 120 regiments or units, the B.A.R. is the pre-eminent Revolutionary War era re-enactment organization in the world. With the B.A.R.’s announcement, we are estimating hundreds of re-enactors from the US will attend the event in Shelburne. In addition, we are expecting many more from Canadian and Nova Scotian re-enactment regiments. This weekend is expected to be an exceptional display of Colour, Pageantry and History. It truly will be a chance to step back in history and visitors will be welcome to participate.
This exciting weekend will include:
• a large, authentic 18th century encampment
• cannon firings
• marching parades
• sunset colour ceremonies
• drills
• staged historical skirmishes
• civilian re-enactments
• a suttlers’ (merchants’) village
• a landing re-enactment
• civilian re-enactments
• commemorative cenotaph ceremony
• introduction of the Shelburne Fyfe
• harbour skirmish
• period games and revelry
• rug hooking and quilt exhibit
Re-enactors are expected to start arriving in Shelburne by 16 July and set up their encampments on the grounds of the old Shelburne Regional High School on King Street, within walking distance of Shelburne’s historic district on the waterfront. Many re-enactors will pull up camp on Monday, 21 July and “march on” to Fortress Louisbourg for its re-enactment event 25-27 July.
As a kick-off to the weekend, the Nova Scotia Guild of Town Criers will be holding its annual Provincial Town Crier Competition from 17-18 July, featuring contenders from across the province. The weekend's activities will include a Then and Now Rug Hooking and Quilt Exhibit showcasing original handiwork and time-honoured crafts. And for those looking for a more genteel ambience, the weekend will be rounded out by a Loyalist Garden Party complete with a live Pageant of 18th Century Fashions!
Founders' Day Weekend
Thursday to Sunday 24-27 JULY 2008
The final weekend of our three showcase July weekends will continue to celebrate Shelburne’s Loyalist history. This weekend will also be geared for the entire family, combining ceremony with a contemporary component.

The core of the weekend’s celebrations will begin on Thursday and centre around the well established Founders’ Days, a successful annual four-day festival traditionally held every July. In addition to the perennial family favourites, the weekend will also incorporate a historic element filled with pomp and pageantry.
Characters in period costume will recreate the Historic Landing of Governor John Parr in 1783, complete with the Renaming Ceremony changing the name of Port Roseway to Shelburne.
Once the Governor has distributed the Land Grants to the Loyalists, a Parade composed of the Loyalist families will be held to honour and acknowledge their contribution to Shelburne’s history and heritage.
Of course, the ever popular schedule of Musical Entertainment, artistic displays and demonstrations will also be featured, and the food and vendor booths will once again be on hand to sell goods for every taste and budget.
All of the weekend’s events will be held on the waterfront, in Shelburne’s historic district. The annual Parade of Lights and Fireworks will illuminate the harbour on Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday evening will also feature an authentic Governor’s Banquet & Ball with 250 loyal subjects dressed in period finery, sampling the fine cuisine of 1783 and raising their glasses to the King.
On Sunday, the Shelburne County Garden Club invites you to the Loyalist Flower Show & Tea featuring Neville MacKay, renowned floral designer and owner of My Mother’s Bloomers in Halifax, who will entertain fans with a demonstration of floral arrangements from the past. Of course, the traditional youth activities held at the Osprey Arts Centre as part of the Founders’ Days programme will continue into Sunday.
