Good evening!  It's been an absolutely gorgeous day - just the kind of weather we'll be getting for the next three weekends.  Remember, you heard it here first ...

A small miracle happened in Shelburne this week - have you seen it yet?  A beautiful flower garden magically appeared on the waterfront by the Mill Building next to the Muir/Cox Boatshop!  Where there used to be an unsightly pile of dirt, weeds and rocks, there is now a tidy and colourful little garden ... thanks to a whole bunch of Shelburne County elves.  So first order of business this week are a few thank yous:
- To the Civic Buildings & Properties Committee and the Waterfront Development Committee for giving us the OK in the first place to beautify the spot.
- Next, to the Town of Shelburne and the Works Department for providing the necessary equipment and labour to create the flowerbed and make it plant-ready.
- To the folks at Harlow Construction who, without any hesitation, very generously donated the soil and mulch for the garden.
- To Alison & Madeline Blades of Lavender Hill Nursery and Jim Spencer of Spencer's Garden Centre & Landscaping who happily donated plants for the flowerbed.
- To the Osprey Arts Centre for being such a good neighbour and offering to water the garden and keep an eye on it.
- And finally, the garden angel who made it happen - Joe Bidderman!  Joe created the design and gave his time, his labour and some of his own plants for the garden.  Not only did he do all the trowel work, he also did all the foot work to make this flowerbed come together.  To quote Joe:  "I'm happy to give back to the community that has supported me.  Besides, I love this Town!".  Our sentiments exactly, Joe ...

So, a very appreciative thank you to all the little elves along the way who quietly made this happen!  And I continue to be amazed at the power of a small community working together.

We now have two Welcome to Shelburne County! events under our belt:  Welcome to Sandy Point on 28 & 29 June and Welcome to Clyde River & Area on 2 Jul.  It's a mixed bag as to whether or not they were successful, however, we have to start somewhere!  I hear the Razzmatazz performance at Sea Coast Entertainments was well attended and Lorraine Donati reports that she did have a few new visitors to her gallery.  And although Phyllis Nickerson of the Sandy Point Rec Group tells me they didn't get a big turn-out for the community supper, many of the faces there were brand new!   It's also a mixed bag for 2 Jul - the Clyde River Busy Bees report that over 100 people attended the Strawberry Tea and hooked rug display at St. Matthews' United Church, easily double the usual number!  There were only a handful of visitors to Portage Canoe Works and Dave & Norma Laycock's gardens in Thomasville, however, there again - they were all visitors to the region!  So the moral of the story is - such events can provide an opportunity to introduce that community to new faces who in turn may fall in love with the place and may decide to become part of that community eventually.  Like I said - we have to start somewhere!

The next community day in the Welcome to Shelburne County! series will be in Shag Harbour on Sat, 16 Aug.  Watch for details once the July madness is over!

I received some disturbing and frustrating reports this week from various folks around Town that certain misguided and self-righteous citizens of this community have apparently decreed that only "authentic" Loyalist costumes will be acceptable attire during the July celebrations and if you're not going to make an authentic costume, don't bother.  HOGWASH! This kind of nonsense just makes my blood boil!  Let me state emphatically that this is not now, nor has it ever been, the opinion of the Loyalist Landing 2008 Society.  The whole point of the celebrations is to celebrate our heritage and have some fun, pure and simple, and the Society welcomes all Loyalist costumes be they authentic, synthetic or otherwise!  In fact, our own costumes are not authentic, nor were they ever intended to be!   We do agree that if you are a re-enactor or plan to join a re-enactment group, your attire should be and does need to be authentic in accordance with that group's requirements.  But for the rest of us who are only here for a good time, not a long time, it simply doesn't make sense to fork out a small fortune for something you'll be wearing for only a year.  If you have taken the time and trouble to make yourself a costume, we truly hope that you will dismiss these misinformed individuals and will proudly wear your costume during the celebrations.  And the next time one of these Einsteins chastises you for not wearing an authentic costume, please remind him or her that it is precisely people in non-authentic costumes who are footing the bill for these celebrations.  And if THEY say it's OK to wear a machine-sewn, cotton-polyester costume - then it is!  End of discussion!

All right, coming up this week - the Waterfront Weekend, our first July showcase event!  Are you ready?  You'll be seeing preparations in Town and along the waterfront all week - the midway actually arrives in Town tomorrow and will set up in the Shelburne Marine Terminal Parking Lot.  Owner Glen tells me this will give them an opportunity to do regular maintenance on the equipment and put a polish on everything before they open on Friday.  Don't forget to be on the waterfront at 10 am on Friday to see the flotilla come into the harbour!  Waterfront concerts, fantastic exhibits, a great variety of vendors, the Crafts, Fleas & Collectibles Market, a Motorcycle Show & Shine, ship tours, harbour cruises, a soapbox derby, sky diving, a treasure hunt, longboat launch, boat races, fireworks - and the list goes on and on!  I have received confirmation from 14 Wing Greenwood that the Cormorant over-the-water SAR demo will take place at 2:30 pm on Friday, however, no word yet on where they plan to park the chopper during lunch ...  stay tuned!

Also this week, join hostess Rita Jenkins at the Let's Give Cancer the Boot! Fashion Show on Tue, 8 July, 2 pm at the Osprey Arts Centre.  Admission is a donation with all proceeds to the Yarmouth Hospital Oncology Unit and the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund.  See the poster and details on our website.

If you're in the mood for a little Loyalist history and heritage, then pop by the Shelburne County Archives & Genealogical Society this Thu, 2 pm for their weekly Loyalist Gatherings - Tea and Family Displays.  This event will be held every Thu throughout July and August, featuring different Loyalist families each week.  At the Gen Centre, 2nd floor, 168 Water Street in Shelburne.  For full details, check our website or contact the Gen Centre at 875-4299 or gencentre@ns.sympatico.ca.

Happy birthday to Dorothy Peacock on Fri who will be spending her special day running the Crafts, Fleas & Collectibles Market - talk about dedication to the cause!

It's going to be an incredible week!
